5 Soccer IQ Questions Every Midfielder Must Ask Themselves
Athleticism can only take you so far on the pitch. While speed and power are fantastic attributes, the world's most elite soccer players—specifically central midfielders—dictate the game entirely through their Soccer IQ.
Soccer IQ refers to spatial awareness, positional prediction, and the speed at which you cognitively process the shifting map of players around you. To rapidly develop this, you need to turn tactical analysis into a habitual internal monologue.
What is Soccer IQ?
It is the ability to read the game two steps ahead. A high-IQ player receives the ball and already knows their next three passing options. A low-IQ player receives the ball, looks down, and only then figures out what to do, resulting in lost possession.
The 5 Vital Tactical Questions
Drill these 5 questions into your mind. You should be asking them continuously while the ball is out of your possession:
- •Where is the space? Look for the largest pockets of green grass that opposing midfielders have vacated. This is where you should drift to receive the ball.
- •Who is the 'Free Man'? If your team wins the ball back right now, who is the outlet pass that is completely unmarked?
- •If I lose the ball, what breaks? Understand the defensive transition. If you attempt a risky through-ball right now and it gets intercepted, are your center-backs exposed?
- •Where is my blind spot? The most dangerous opposing attackers operate behind your field of vision. Constantly check over your shoulder.
- •What is the rhythm? Does the game need to be slowed down with safe, lateral possession, or is the opposing defense disorganized, screaming for a rapid counter-attack?
Building the Scanning Habit
You cannot answer these questions if you don't collect data.
[!IMPORTANT]
The greatest midfielders in history (think Xavi or De Bruyne) "scan" the field—physically turning their heads away from the ball—up to 6 times in the 10 seconds before they receive a pass.
Make head-scanning your primary daily soccer habit. In your next scrimmage, consciously force yourself to look away from the ball every three seconds. Collect the spatial data, answer the 5 questions, and watch the game slow down around you.
