IPL Team Owners: Full List of Who Owns Your Favorite IPL Team

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is more than just cricket. It is an explosive cocktail of business, entertainment, and strategy. Over the years, the league has witnessed several iconic and unforgettable moments,

some of which have left fans in splits.

IPL team owners are essential in determining the direction of the league, sponsoring player auctions, and making management decisions.

In 2025, ownership remains divided among three key groups: famous Bollywood personalities, business magnates, and multinational companies. A few teams have stayed with their original owners, but there has been a drastic change with others. Let’s look at the current IPL team owners list, their history, their impact on the league, and their franchises’ achievements in clinching the IPL trophies.

Every owner of an IPL franchise has a unique approach when it comes to finances and team strategies. Some focus on strengthening their brand, while others prioritize player development and international expansion. This shift in ownership strategies reflects how

, adapting to new trends and business models. IPL team ownership in 2025 continues to shape the league’s competitive landscape and overall success.

India Cements Ltd has owned Chennai Super Kings since the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008. N. Srinivasan is the chairman of India Cements Ltd. He has been a powerful influence on the IPL due to his tenure as a former BCCI President.

His leadership has greatly contributed to the success and stability of CSK. Under his management, CSK has attained a position as one of the top IPL teams, with a record of five championship titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Renowned for their aggressive performances, CSK has always been a dominant force.

Kiran Kumar Grandhi’s GMR Group and Parth Jindal’s JSW Group co-own the Delhi Capitals. While GMR has invested since 2008, JSW acquired a 50% stake in 2018. This brought a more aggressive, data-driven approach to team management.

Delhi Capitals have yet to win an IPL, but they finished as runners-up in 2020 and have remained competitive in the league, particularly with their focus on younger Indian talent.

One of the newest teams in the IPL, the Gujarat Titans, was owned by CVC Capital Partners until major ownership changed hands in 2025 when the Torrent Group (Mehta family) assumed control. Torrent Group, a household name in pharmaceuticals and energy, provides substantial funding to the franchise.

GT proved their capability by winning the championship in its debut IPL season in 2022, showcasing its strength on the biggest stage. The new owners are expected to build on this strong foundation and turn the franchise into a title-winning team in the future.

Kolkata Knight Riders still remains one of the flashiest franchises due to the ownership of Shah Rukh Khan through Red Chillies Entertainment. His associates, Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta, bring in further business acumen through Mehta Group.

KKR has lifted the IPL trophy two times, in 2012 and 2014, since their purchase in 2008, with both victories under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy. The franchise has built a strong reputation for its marketing strategies, passionate supporters, and international brand recognition.

Founded in the year 2021, the Lucknow Super Giants franchise is owned by the RPSG Group, which is chaired by Sanjiv Goenka. Goenka has previously owned football and kabaddi teams, so his interest in sports investments is no surprise.

LSG is rapidly developing in the Indian Premier League because of Goenka’s strategies, which blend data analytics with talent scouting and other decision-making processes. Although the team hasn’t claimed a title yet, their strong performances in the playoff rounds of 2022 and 2023 demonstrated their outstanding potential.

Most reporters agree, the Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise. The franchise is owned by Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani of Reliance Industries.

The Ambanis have transformed MI into a powerhouse by winning five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Because of its immense wealth and smart investments, MI is a consistently top-performing franchise. With icons such as Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya, MI leads the way in the IPL.

Mohit Burman (Dabur Group), Ness Wadia (Wadia Group), Preity Zinta (Bollywood actress), and Karan Paul (Apeejay Surrendra Group) co-own Punjab Kings (previously Kings XI Punjab). The franchise boasts a diverse fanbase.

Since buying the team in 2008, they have struggled to find stability, except for reaching the IPL final in 2014. Although PBKS has yet to win a title, they frequently make headlines for their style of cricket and Preity Zinta’s active involvement.

Manoj Badale (Emerging Media), Lachlan Murdoch (Fox Media), and Gerry Cardinale (RedBird Capital Partners) lead the global consortium that owns the Rajasthan Royals.

RR built its legacy by winning the inaugural IPL title in 2008 under Shane Warne’s captaincy. As a constantly evolving franchise, RR has built a strong scouting system that identifies and nurtures top talent. This approach has developed long-term players like Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Jos Buttler, reinforcing its player-centric philosophy.

RCB is owned by United Spirits (Diageo), making them one of the richest IPL franchise owners. Previously, it was owned by Vijay Mallya, but financial troubles led to United Spirits taking full control in 2016. Anand Kripalu, the CEO of United Spirits, plays an indirect role in RCB’s ownership. Despite their massive fan following, Royal Challengers Bengaluru remains titleless in the IPL.

They’ve been runners-up three times (2009, 2011, 2016), powered by legendary superstars like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle, who define their rich cricket legacy.

The Deccan Chargers, which changed its name to Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2012, is owned by Kalanithi Maran and his daughter Kavya Maran via Sun TV Network. Under the leadership of David Warner, SRH clinched the IPL championship title in 2016.

Renowned for their strategic gameplay, bowling strength, and resilience, SRH consistently fights through the IPL season, remaining a formidable playoff contender.

Investing in an IPL team involves more than just money. IPL franchise owners make crucial decisions in the team’s planning, recruitment of management staff and players, and retention activities. For example, consistently stable ownership and long-term vision have led to multiple championship wins for Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. On the other hand, constant ownership changes and internal conflicts have led to the Punjab Kings team underperforming.

Branding, sponsorships, and ownership stability significantly impact a team’s success. Long-term vision and financial strength have led franchises like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to multiple title wins. Meanwhile, inconsistent leadership and frequent changes have hindered other teams. With evolving dynamics, some fans have started questioning whether

the IPL is beginning to lose its charm.

Yet, the IPL remains a powerhouse of entertainment, drawing millions of viewers each season. Its ability to adapt and innovate ensures that the excitement never truly fades. However, strategic ownership decisions continue to play a crucial role in keeping the league engaging and competitive.

The IPL team owners are not merely investors, they are modern-day cricket industrialists. From Mukesh Ambani, a self-made billionaire, to Bollywood’s Shah Rukh Khan, every IPL owner brings a unique story to the league. Their sponsorships and business decisions drive the league’s expansion, nurture talent, and attract global interest in the sport. As the IPL continues to grow, these owners will play a crucial role in introducing fresh ideas, enhancing branding, and globalizing the franchise.
